The Old Dominion University Golf Training Facility offers state-of-the-art training and collaboration spaces to enhance the outstanding training program at the University. Envisioned as a premier destination, this facility elevates ODU Golf with a purpose-built environment designed to sharpen skills, strengthen team culture, and give athletes a competitive edge. Supporting both the men’s and women’s programs, the space embodies the university’s commitment to excellence on the course and in the classroom.
This project transforms a portion of the Athletic Administration Building into a cutting-edge golf training hub that positions ODU at the forefront of collegiate athletic development. By reimagining an underutilized team room and storage area, the design unlocks the full potential of the space, delivering a high-performance environment tailored to today’s student-athlete.
The new facility incorporates two golf simulator rooms designed for swing analysis and instruction for individuals and multiple team members at the same time. Integrated technology includes Trackman radar ball flight and spin tracking, pressure sensitive hitting mats, and high-speed video capture and analysis. This equipment allows coaches to measure and analyze ball speed, spin, launch angle, club path, force, and balance to create customized lessons for each player.
The facility also incorporates state-of-the-art technology for putting with the installation of a virtual green and SAM PuttLab. The virtual green uses pneumatic actuators to change the slope of the green to simulate various putting conditions. Video projection from the ceiling assists in determining the correct golf line and speed for the put. Video recording and analysis allows coaches to instruct players to improve putting technique.
In addition to serving as a training facility, the golf performance center is the home for the golf team while on campus. A comfortable lounge and cafe, study areas, meeting room, and renovated locker rooms give the players a place to relax, collaborate, and bond with teammates. This comfortable team space integrates seamlessly with the training and administrative areas of the facility.
The design pairs performance with identity. Bold, modern finishes aligned with ODU’s branding establish a strong visual presence, while warm, refined materials create an atmosphere that is both energizing and welcoming. A reimagined entry sequence, custom millwork, and a prominent trophy display celebrate the program’s legacy while reinforcing its forward momentum.
Strategic expansion further amplifies the facility’s capabilities. By reclaiming adjacent storage space and introducing a new exterior connection, the design extends the training environment beyond the building by linking seamlessly to an outdoor putting green and creating a dynamic indoor-outdoor experience.
Behind the scenes, the renovation integrates critical upgrades to meet modern code, accessibility, and energy efficiency standards—ensuring the facility is as resilient and future-ready as it is high-performing. Targeted interior demolition, upgraded finishes, enhanced lighting, and plumbing upgrades deliver a modern transformation with smart and efficient interventions.
