The Charles City Library is located at the end of the main axis on the historic courthouse green. The 8,200 square foot library accommodates uniquely designed children and teen areas, a large program room, and the Center for Local History. The building is designed to be compatible with the historic courthouse and the heritage of Charles City, while providing for the needs of a modern library. The architecture and building forms on the interior and exterior incorporate features symbolic of the County’s four centuries, three cultures, and two rivers. A large entry plaza, used for receptions and public events, incorporates a historical timeline in the paving leading to a memorial wall. A small outdoor amphitheater and large circular seating lawn is designed to accommodate outdoor children’s and adult’s programs, outdoor performances, and public ceremonies.
