Charles City County Library Landscaping
Charles City, VA
Charles City County was founded at the confluence of the James and the Chickahominy Rivers. A symbolic entry plaza at the front of the building highlights the importance of the County’s two rivers and four centuries of history. Two rain gardens, which feature native river’s edge planting, converge at a stone monument. A polished granite timeline is set into the edge of the plaza connecting the building entrance to the stone monument. A winding path at the rear of the building is bounded by an interpretive children’s garden which connects an outdoor amphitheater to a wildlife nature trail. Bio-retention areas recall the appearance of river marshes and promote sustainable design practices on the site.
